First Update In A While !

So much has happened in the last two years, that updating a website has been the least of our priorities. A year’s worth of building work in 2010, whilst operating a fully occupied home and the arrival of new residents and launch of a Respite service in 2011 has really kept us busy. These two years have really made us appreciate the hardworking, loyal and caring staff that we have working with us in Castleview, without whom the developments would not have been possible.

Castleview opened 22 years ago this September and has grown to provide accomodation for 34 permanent and 2 respite residents.  Some of the names and faces may have changed, both in terms of staff and residents, but the ethos remains very much the same – to provide a safe, secure, happy and friendly place to live right in the heart of the local community.  Most of all, this is our Residents’ home and they are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of decision making, from who works here to what is on the menu at tea time.

The additions and renovations to the building have not only provided more beds, but also improved accessibility throughout the home, with wider, brighter, less convaluted corridors and an additional lift at the rear of the house, meaning that all rooms can now be reached without need to use the stairs.  A new sensory room has very generously been equipped by one of our late resident’s families and named ‘The Alan Kane Starlight Room’.  This will provide our residents with many hours of stimulation and relaxation as required.

Commencement of a respite service at the start of 2011 has been a great challenge, due mainly to the more complex needs experienced by users of the service and the issues that frequently changing clientel throws up. Once again it has been the perserverance and dedication of our staff that has enabled us to deliver an excellent level of service to the residents who visit and peace of mind to their families that they have been left in a safe and caring environment.

Moving on in to 2012, February saw the staff production of Cinderella;  The traditional story was adapted to reflect our residents’ lives and was set in Carrickfergus and Belfast’s The Black Box. Notable characters included the ‘two ugly sisters’ (Georgina and Glenda), the ‘extremely ugly sister in law’ (Jacquelina) and DJ Rhonda. The production involved 15 members of staff on stage and numerous other contributors back stage.  It went down a storm with residents and staff alike.  Another production next year ? Who knows ? Suggestions on a post card.

Residents enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations and Olympic and Paralympic games immensely, getting fully in to the spirit of the occasions. They lined the streets outside Castleview for the Jubille parades and even had a visit from the Olympic torch as it passed through the town.

We try to make our residents’ days as action-packed and fun as we are able and they want them to be.  Activities take place all year round, however Spring and Summer months see many bus runs, outings and holidays. This year we availed of the services of Strangford Bay Lodge near Portaferry www.strangfordbaylodge.com.  The house is owned by Paul Toner, a very convivial host, and has been specially adapted and equipped to allow all abilities to make use of the facilities. Residents went in groups of 5 or 6 with two members of staff and used the house as their base for touring and exploring the area.  All agreed that they had an excellent time.

We anticipate updating the website on a more frequent basis going forward and recommend you visit the site to update yourselves on the activities and goings on in the lives of the Residents and staff of Castleview.
